Reid v Greater Southern Area Health Service
The Litigation Team of Commins Hendriks was recently involved in the widely
reported settlement of a case against Greater Southern Area Health Service
relating to actions of the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
The case was concerned with the trial use of Misoprostol, a drug approved
for the treatment of stomach ulcers, as a means to induce labour.
Commonly used to abort dead foetuses, Misoprostol has the high risk of
causing hyperstimulation of the uterus, resulting in decreased oxygen flow
to the baby causing problems such as cerebral palsy, brain injury and
intellectual disabilities.
The success of our team in conducting and settling this matter has
resulted in a just result to the family concerned and will assist to
provide adequate care and quality of life to their infant.
The trial operated at a number of hospitals throughout NSW from
approximately 1999 to 2003, with an unknown amount of participants
involved. If you have been involved in this trial and have concerns, please
contact our Litigation team on 1800 643 779.
